Spicy Turkey Mabu Tofu

Mabu tofu is definitely one of my favorite Japanese dishes (Some say Chinese). I'd only used packaged sauce to make mabu tofu before until I tried this delicious homemade one. It was incredibly simple to make, too. Oh and it tasted wonderful! I enjoyed every bite of it. I used ground turkey instead of pork or beef but you can certainly use ground pork or beef if you want. I think ground turkey was awesome in it. This recipe was adapted and changed from RecipeZarr.

Ingredients:

1/2 to 1 lb ground turkey
1 lb firm tofu, cubed
1/2 onion, chopped (optional)
1-inch gingerroot, finely chopped
1-2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 tablespoon crushed red pepper
3 tablespoons miso (miso soup paste)
1 cup water
2 tablespoons sake or rice wine
2 chicken bullions, crushed
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon cornstarch + 1 tablespoon water
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 green onion, chopped

Directions:

Mix water, miso, sugar, sake, salt, and bouillon in a bowl and set aside.

Heat oil in a wok and saute onion, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flake. Add ground turkey in the wok and saute. Add miso mixture in the wok and bring to a boil. Add tofu and simmer on medium heat for 10 minutes. Sprinkle with green onions on top and stir.

Mix cornstarch with 1 tbsp of water and pour into the wok. Stir carefully and pour sesame oil.

Serve with rice. Enjoy!!

  27. I have never had mapu tofu before. But this dish looks terrific. The ground turkey also sounds more appealing than ground beef or pork, at least for this particular recipe.

  31. Hi everyone, thanks for your comments! The only reason why I always thought it was Japanese food is because of the name and also my husband who lived in Japan said he always had it while he lived there. :) But I've seen Chinese version of the recipe as well. It is really good! I know Koreans enjoy this dish as well. I guess it's quite popular among a lot of Asian countries, it seems. :)

  38. THIS is great. I love love love that you used turkey, how healthy! Since watching a lot of food industry documentaries I have been hesitant in buying ground pork or beef. I usually will ground my own. Mapo tofu is one of my most loved chinese dishes, the spicy sauce along with the soft silky tofu. YUM
