Curried Yellow Split Pea Soup

Oh I have been discovering all kinds of new food lately, from lentils, chickpeas, to split peas! Can you believe I had never had any split peas before I made this soup? Oh now, I am a fan! I still haven't tried green split peas but I got some in my cupboard and can't wait to try them. I loved the texture of the peas in this soup. And it tasted fabulous! I think chopped onions would have made this soup even better but as you might already know, I have a husband who abhores onions. That's right. He abhores onions, stronger than "hate", that is. But even without oninos, the soup was great and I'd definitely make it again. I had my soup with a piece of pita but I think this soup would go wonderfully with fresh Naan.

Curried Yellow Split Pea Soup

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon chopped garlic (add chopped onions if you want)
1 lb yellow split peas, rinsed
5 cups low sodium vegetable broth
1-2 tablespoons curry powder (I used 2 tbsp but you can use just 1 tbsp)
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

Place the butter in a large saucepan over medium high heat. When the butter starts to melt, add the garlic (and onions) and stir frequently until the garlic starts to brown (or the onions are translucent), about 2-3 minutes (if using onions, about 5-6 minutes).

Add the split peas and the curry powder to the pan and stir well with the garlic (and onions). Add the vegetable broth and bring it to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover and cook at a simmer until the peas are tender and no longer hold their shape, about 45-60 minutes (or even longer). Taste and adjust seasoning (salt and pepper) according to your liking.

Serve warm.

  1. My mother made the most lovely soup from green split peas and ham. I remember my father being so happy when she made it. We ate it with corn bread. She froze leftovers for future meals.

Lentils, chickpeas (also called garbanzo beans) are excellent. Interesting that I also have a husband who can not tolerate being in the same building with an onion. Hard to make soup without an onion. I sneak them in, but you seem like a nicer person than I am.

  5. i have yet to try split pea soup too! that's great that you got creative with the ingredients. i never would've thought to put curry in this soup. (and it's too bad your husband abhores onions. that is so strange! onions are in practically EVERYTHING!) lol.

  7. I love the bright color of this soup compared to the usual drab green pea soup. The flavors here really kick it up. Sounds great!

  8. I still think the question is, can he taste the onions if you disguise them really, really well? ;)

This looks great though even without the onions! Thanks for sharing! I love the curry,

  9. Daily Chef,
At many restaurants, he asks "no onions" but then he takes a bite of a burrito, for example, and frowns like he has eaten something rotting or something, and sure enough, there are finely chopped onions. He tastes it no matter how finely onions are chopped. One time, I brought some split pea curry home from a cooking group which had onions which were absolutely invisible so I wanted to do a little experiment and asked him to taste it saying it's so good. And after having a bite, he almost puked. So yeah, I can't "trick" him at all. It doesn't work. People think he'll eat onions if I "hide" it somehow in soups but no, he tastes it immediately and pukes. It's sad but what can I do. I married him knowing he doesn't eat onions... :) It's okay, though. I am used to it. When we go out to eat, I get to order things with a lot of onions, like onion rings! :)

  18. I love, love, love curry powder. I actually just tried it for the first time a few months ago-what a great addition to dishes! I don't think I could survive if I had a husband who hated onions :-(

  19. I agree what a beautiful sounding and looking soup. My dad is an onion hater too, but only the texture bothers him, so my mom can use onion powder to flavor their foods. Sounds like your hubby hates the flavor...
